The history of Titus

From a single screw to a global brand

At Titus, we’re proud of our rich history. From our beginnings in the 1970s, we’ve grown into a global leader in precision-engineered furniture components, all driven by an innovative spirit. We put our success down to an unwavering commitment to quality and improvement, something that hasn’t changed since day one

The origins of Titus

Our journey began in 1973 when Robert Appleby founded Titus Tool Company in the UK. The company started with a single, innovative product: the Hi-Lo Black screw. This screw offered superior grip compared to conventional screws and was first used for fastening bookcases. This simple but effective invention set the tone for our future. It showed our ability to solve problems with precise, well-engineered solutions.

Growing and innovating

Throughout the 1980s, we expanded our product range to meet the evolving needs of the furniture manufacturing industry. We introduced concealed cabinet connectors and Quickfit technology, which became essential for the growing particle board furniture market.

In the 1990s, our commitment to innovation continued. In 1996 we rebranded, emphasising our dedication to developing high-volume, innovative furniture connectors. Our vision was clear: to have our products in every home. We supported this by improving our manufacturing processes and developing components that made assembly easier for the end user.

A strong UK presence

Our UK headquarters in Sherburn in Elmet has played a key role in our growth. We’ve focused on creating innovative solutions and maintaining high quality standards. Titus UK continues to develop products that meet the specific needs of British furniture manufacturers, making us a trusted partner in the industry.

Strategic acquisitions and global growth

The turn of the century was a time of significant growth for Titus. In 2005, we acquired Lama, a Slovenian specialist in hinge technology. This allowed us to expand our portfolio to include soft-close solutions, which became popular in household products like cabinets.

Our global reach continued with the acquisition of Tekform in Australia in 2014. This move strengthened our presence in the Asia-Pacific region and allowed us to introduce the T-type hinge, a flagship product known for its soft-closing mechanism. By 2019, we had launched the TeraBlack product range, featuring a distinctive dark-grey, non-reflective finish that’s resistant to abrasion and scratching.

A global leader in precision engineering

Today, Titus is a global leader in precision engineering, serving customers in over 70 countries. We have arms across Europe, America, Asia and Australia. Our products include cabinet hardware, damping solutions and precision parts. We use an integrated approach in our research, development and production processes to ensure we’re constantly innovating and meeting the needs of various industries.

Our philosophy and commitment

Understanding customer needs is at the heart of what we do. We aim to make our customers’ products better by providing quality components at competitive prices. We’re always learning about different markets to find and meet needs, especially where we can produce in large volumes.

We’re constantly striving for global leadership by focusing on product innovation and providing value to our customers. We build long-term relationships and value a culture of continuous improvement. This helps us maintain consistent quality worldwide and always adapt to our customers’ changing needs.

Looking to the future

Ultimately, we help our customers succeed by providing reliable, precision-engineered components over the long term. We’re always updating our approach to stay competitive in a rapidly changing market.
